How do physical environments influence behaviour, cognition, and spatial experience?
How can research evidence inform design without reducing architecture to simple cause-and-effect claims?
How can environments be designed to support positive action, adaptation, and flourishing?
Working across disciplines, practice and academia, I have had the opportunity to address (and even attempt answering!) these questions in workplace, educational, residential, and public settings.
My research to date has explored interpersonal distancing and workplace behaviour, neurodiversity and sensory experience, virtual reality as a method for studying spatial preferences and activity-based working, evidence-informed atrium design, human-centred approaches to design research, and student experience in learning environments. Drawing on field studies, experimental and quasi-experimental methods, post-occupancy evaluation, and spatial behavioural analysis, this knowledge has often been translated into design decisions on live projects. Wider work considers flourishing, affordances, architectural aesthetics, and the development of transdisciplinary frameworks for connecting design with behavioural evidence, including conjecture mapping, evidence translation, and field-based experimentation.
